BREED: Alaskan Malamute
ORIGIN: Alaska
HISTORY: These dogs where bred by the Malhemutes, an Inuit tribe, to hunt Caribou and guard their camps. For centuries they were indispensable to the people of Alaska. Used as a sled dog they are not as fast as the Huskies but can pull heavier loads.
DISCRIPTION: Malamutes are large working dogs weighing between 34 and 38kg and standing between 58 and 65cm high, with males tending to be bigger than females. Colours range from shadings of light grey to black and sable to red, white always predominant on belly, feet and face.
CHARACTER: They are loyal, affectionate and intelligent with a mind of their own. Their friendliness makes them unsuitable for use as guard dogs. Mature dogs are calm and quite. Very active and will be destructive if closed in and left alone.
WHAT TO CONSIDER ON ACQUIRING AN ALASKAN MALAMUTE:That, although it is hardy and healthy it may be troubled by hereditary problems such as bloat, hipdysplacia and chondrodysplacia. They can adapt to City life but needs regular exercise and grooming. Makes a beautiful, calm and friendly pet. They can suffer in very hot weather and need to be watched.
